Donald Trump is punishing California for passing state laws protecting the environment -- yes, really. Not satisfied with rolling back federal auto emission regulations, he’s now directing federal agencies to sue California over the state’s regulation of the auto industry -- and the Department of Justice to investigate automakers talking to California for unspecified antitrust violations.
It’s a blatant threat to force car manufacturers into making dirtier cars emitting more smog and more pollution. It’s a bullying tactic in which the Justice Department has become a perversion of itself, acting as a political arm of Trump’s reelection campaign. And it’s just plain wrong.
Federal agencies are supposed to enforce the law fairly and without personal vendettas or motivations driven by political ideology. It sorta goes without saying, but the Justice Department is supposed to seek justice. Under Trump, the Justice Department has become a caricature of itself. The only significant antitrust claims the Justice Department has brought since 2017 are against Trump’s political enemies. Now the DOJ is threatening antitrust actions against four carmakers who are dealing with California rather than the despot in the White House.
Urge the Justice Department to back off!
