Francis Rooney (R-FL-19) is trying to position himself as a Republican leader on climate change. He’s just been named the Republican leader of the bipartisan “Climate Solutions Caucus.” But he’s heavily invested in oil money.
Our democracy is drowning in a tidal wave of dark oily money. Lawmakers who seek to legislate fossil fuel companies shouldn’t be taking money from them. Yet Rooney is trying to have it both ways: get rich off fossil fuel companies while claiming that he stands for responsible climate solutions.
He literally sat on the board of Laredo Petroleum and the oil drilling firm Helmerich & Payne. He still holds investments worth up to $1,000,000 in Laredo. And he’s invested in two dozen more oil companies.
Rooney wants to be taken seriously on climate. But he can’t do so with millions invested in the fossil fuel companies causing the climate crisis.
