#StopClovisDemand Senators Oppose Trump's Pick for the USDA's Chief Scientist

The Department of Agriculture is on the front lines of the climate crisis. Trump has appointed Sam Clovis as its chief scientist. But Clovis is a racist climate denier, not a scientist.

Clovis has an ugly history of racist and anti-science rants. In a 2011 blog post, Clovis called progressives “race traitors.” Just months before, he criticized Hurricane Katrina survivors, attributing their hardships to a “cultural” failure. Like Trump, he believes climate change is "junk science."

We can’t have a bush-league Rush Limbaugh leading the USDA’s science programs.

Add your name to call on all Senators: "Strongly oppose Sam Clovis's confirmation as the U.S. Under Secretary of Agriculture for Research, Education, and Economics."

Senators in Opposition:

Kamala Harris (D-CA)
Brian Schatz (D-HI)
Chuck Schumer (D-NY)
Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI)
Debbie Stabenow (D-MI)*
Tom Udall (D-NM)
Patty Murray (D-WA)
Maria Cantwell (D-WA)
Patrick Leahy (D-VT)*
Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND)*

Racism and hostility to scientific research and facts are what is not needed in a Secretary of Agriculture for Research, Education, and Economics.

Sam Clovis lacks the qualifications and needs to be replaced by someone qualified.

The head of FEMA has admitted that he cannot do his job without accounting for the effects of climate change. The same should be true for the person in charge of the USDA, as agriculture is highly subject to climate change, including shifting seasons, droughts, floods, a shift of ideal weather for each crop to the north, and the spread of pests due to such changes as higher minimum nighttime temperatures in the winter.

Our food supply will be extremely challenged by climate change, and unless we plan accordingly, the United States could suffer major crop failures that will affect food supplies around the world. We need a scientist who understands the true challenges that agriculture faces as the new, warmer world continues to unfold.
