Exxon Petition to State AGs

Exxon knew about climate change in the 1970s. And surprise, surprise, they’ve been lying about it ever since -- they’ve spent tens of millions of dollars over the past forty years funding a climate denial industry that keeps the public in the dark and pressures lawmakers not to fix the problem.

We’re talking about what could be the largest case of fraud in human history.

New York State’s Attorney General already started an investigation. California’s AG started an investigation, and earned her a Climate Hawks Vote endorsement. Maryland's AG listened to your petition and started an investigation. Massachusetts’ AG started an investigation. Now AGs across the country are thinking about following suit. But they need to know that we’re watching, and that we demand they act now.

These sorts of investigations are what convinced America about the evil of Big Tobacco -- it’s time for Big Oil to get the same treatment.

So please, join the call: Exxon’s day in court has come -- they need to tell the truth in court, and face the consequences of their lies and fraud.

Launch a prosecution of Exxon and its fellow fossil-fuel companies for deliberate and malicious climate deception.

The business decision to knowingly perpetrate misinformation and outright lies by EXXON and its fellow fossil fuel companies about climate change must be countered with, not just the truth, but fines that cover the true cost of those lies and jail sentences for those who spoke and acted on these lies to the public and to our politicians, thereby endangering this country and the world at large. This is no small problem. EXXON must be held to account and New York, California, Maryland, and Massachusetts seem to understand this. I sincerely hope that you will be able to bring other States into this group and go after EXXON tooth and nail. I am absolutely infuriated with EXXON, as I presume so many in the public are. You should know that many in this country are watching with great hope and with great trepidation, the action(s) you and other states in the Union will take on the public’s behalf. And, oh, yes: “Bravo” to those States’ AGs who have forged ahead on the country’s behalf.

This deliberate misinformation has cost us $billions/trillions, public trust and the ability to move toward a solution to the carbon build-up in the atmosphere. Exxon must bear a large of the responcibility, and must be held accountable.
