Becerra vs Exxon

Exxon knew about climate change in the 1970s. And surprise, surprise, they’ve been lying about it ever since -- they’ve spent tens of millions of dollars over the past forty years funding a climate denial industry that keeps the public in the dark and pressures lawmakers not to fix the problem.

We’re talking about what could be the largest case of fraud in human history.

At Climate Hawks Vote, we’ve been on the forefront of demanding investigations - in fact, California Attorney General Kamala Harris’ promise to investigate Exxon led us to endorse her when she ran for Senate. But the investigation sidelined during the campaign. Now it’s time for her successor in the California Attorney General's office, Xavier Becerra, to step up. New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey have been leading the effort to uncover what Exxon knew - while Becerra remains silent.

California, which prides itself on its climate leadership, needs to join New York and Massachusetts in investigating and holding accountable Exxon.

Tell California Attorney General Xavier Becerra: Investigate Exxon and its fellow fossil-fuel companies for deliberate and malicious climate deception.

The scale of deliberate ignorance and deception in the growing shadow of such a colossal threat reminds one of German political and military figures avoiding responsibility for righting a disastrously leeward-leaning ship in the 1930s – someone needs to pay for ignoring this threat, for obfuscating it, and for continuing to do so. This time around, Nuremberg will hopefully precede the disaster.

It’s a shame Exxon voting shareholders are not demanding the company start to invest in wind and solar energy. Also, I’m sure most of these stockholders also invest in the auto industry. Why are these people not demanding the auto industry all comply with vehicles getting 40 + miles per hour. The technology is there. With profits from solar and wind they could exist with fewer profits from fossil fuels and still pay shareholders the same or better. We must stop offshore drilliong, fracking, destroying rain forests, and start preserving this plannet for future generations.
