Becerra vs Exxon

Exxon knew about climate change in the 1970s. And surprise, surprise, they’ve been lying about it ever since -- they’ve spent tens of millions of dollars over the past forty years funding a climate denial industry that keeps the public in the dark and pressures lawmakers not to fix the problem.

We’re talking about what could be the largest case of fraud in human history.

At Climate Hawks Vote, we’ve been on the forefront of demanding investigations - in fact, California Attorney General Kamala Harris’ promise to investigate Exxon led us to endorse her when she ran for Senate. But the investigation sidelined during the campaign. Now it’s time for her successor in the California Attorney General's office, Xavier Becerra, to step up. New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey have been leading the effort to uncover what Exxon knew - while Becerra remains silent.

California, which prides itself on its climate leadership, needs to join New York and Massachusetts in investigating and holding accountable Exxon.

Tell California Attorney General Xavier Becerra: Investigate Exxon and its fellow fossil-fuel companies for deliberate and malicious climate deception.

It’s not too late to clean up Exxon’s record, admitting the environmental impact they’ve had until now, drop fossil fuels completely and produce energy in other ways; this way the company would still make money by the truckloads but their name wouldn’t be synonymous with environmental disaster any longer.

Big fossil fuel companies need to be held accountable for the damages they have knowingly inflicted on our world, just as big Tobacco was eventually held to account.
