Ban Fracking in the Democratic Party Platform

Update: Read the final text of the 2016 Democratic Platform. Read about how Climate Hawks Vote and allies confronted Democratic leaders at the Democratic National Convention on fracking.

Fracking is a type of drilling that injects millions of gallons of hydraulic fluids — a mixture of chemicals, water and sand — into a well to create pressure that cracks open rock underground, releasing natural gas or oil. This process can deplete and contaminate local water, damage the environment and threaten public health.

The fugitive methane pollution from the hydrofracturing process is accelerating global warming. On a national scale, a growing body of scientific evidence is building that the climate benefits of switching from coal to natural gas were a total mirage, with the catastrophic Porter Ranch methane blowout the most visible and extreme example of a nationwide surge in methane leakage as a result of the domestic fracking boom promoted by the Bush and Obama administrations. Methane is a greenhouse gas that is 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide on a twenty-year timespan.

The Democratic Party needs to take a clear stand against dirty energy and for a climate-safe future - the party platform should call for an immediate moratorium on fracking everywhere.

To Debbie Wasserman Schultz, DNC Chair and Delegates of the 2016 Democratic National Convention:

Make a ban on fracking for natural gas an official plank of the 2016 Democratic Party platform.

Fracking is an abuse of precious water sources. It often pollutes water sources and even if it doesn’t cause direct pollution, it uses up the resource in a totally non-renewable way. This is bad for our environment, bad for our future. We must go beyond the fossil fuel industry and enthusiastically embrace renewable resources, as many Americans are already doing.

Fracking has no good side. It is a disaster. Let’s ban it completely now.

Fracking is dangerous to the land, water, and existence of this planet. I watched “Gasland” and"Gasland 2" and it was beyond frightening. Unless we stop destroying the planet with fossil fuels, we have no hope of leaving a cleaner, safer planet for our progeny.

Terrific! To put an overall ban on this hideous practice would be a great gift to the nation, and, specifically,

to the people and areas which have been so badly mauled and poisoned by it.

george craciun Fracking is an abomination, destroying precious water and aquifers with toxic chemicals, sickening the public, promoting geologic instability (i.e. earthquakes) and adding heat trapping methane and CO2 to an already overloaded atmosphere. This technique should (must) be permanently banned, everywhere on earth !

Start protecting our environment and stop endangering us all. It should be a constitutional right to live safely and not be afraid of having our ground water and air polluted for generations to come. Our environment shouldn’t be sold to the highest bidder. The sun is a lasting source of free energy that should be used everywhere. China is leading the world in solar technology. Germany uses solar energy for the majority of their nation’s electricity. We should have the right to healthy and safe energy in our country too. Ban fracking immediately! Make it part of your platform. Stop taking money from the fossil fuel industry. Keep it in the ground.
